Pablo Diaz Carballo

acrylic on canvas

I am a professional artist working on research projects in contemporary art. I believe art should be taught just like science or sports. When I discovered the power that art offers to expand the mind, I was amazed and realized that the main value of the arts is that they expand the mind and enhance creativity which will be useful in any professional field.

This happened when I was drawing an outdoor tree in an exercise at university. The tree stopped being a concept in my mind and I could see it in its shape, colors, and its multiple characteristics, it was the powerful presence of a living being. Until that moment I had only seen trees through the mental filter of the concept: “tree.” I was also surprised that I hadn’t been taught this in school. School art classes distorted a reality that had nothing to do with the experience of the outdoor drawing workshop.

A year later I came across the metaphor of the House of the Mind in the painting workshop, which had to do with the way we know it. All my painting was developed from three rectangles, lights, and shadows. Then I discovered a connection between my pictorial work with conceptual art and with Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Joseph Kosuth, and Jackson Pollock.

I had been one of the protagonists of the punk-rock movement in 1980 and I was very upset with the deterioration of the way of life, the violation of human rights, and the poor quality of education, among other things. I built my career following contemporary art proposals and developed together with Arelis Díaz a work of cultural art that impacted 4,620 students in Caracas with art workshops. This expanded work of art was operational between 1999 and 2014 when we were forced into exile. In the Netherlands, another 300 students enjoyed these programs. We enter 2019 and have given other workshops to 20 students. My painting developed from my enlarged artwork.

I have exhibited my paintings and this work in galleries and museums, I have national and international awards and recognitions, even in the USA. My paintings are found in public and private collections
